E19. Parts Party with Max Littman
Max Littman is a gay male therapist in Oakland, California. He specializes in relationship counseling, therapy for work burnout, LGBTQ+ therapy, and trauma therapy, with a particular emphasis on gay and queer men and childhood trauma.
Much of this comes from lived experience. When it comes to being gay, Max says he knows what it’s like to grow up sensing something is different before there is language for it, to carry shame quietly, to mask, to wait, and to come out internally long before letting others in. Max acknowledges that coming out is not a single moment of relief, but often the beginning of a new, tender, and disorienting developmental phase.
His recent book Internal Family Systems Therapy for Gay and Queer Men: A Companion for After Coming Out explores the deeper, less visible layers of the journey: navigating friendship, intimacy, community, identity, self-worth, and the emotional burdens that can linger long after coming out.
Max is a prolific author and has written blog posts on many different topics related to therapy and IFS. We had a great time asking him about his own internal world of parts and Self.
